Why Angellica Bell’s Viral Clip Reminds Us To Give Black Women Their Flowers

Flowers - Irina zhuravleva - Angellica Bell Ronke Lawal newsletter

A few days ago a clip from a radio segment featuring Angellica Bell and Fleur East went viral. In that clip Angellica shared that sometimes she thinks she has failed. To hear a woman as phenomenal as her state this really hit home.

I was moved by her words because they resonated deeply with my own life but also the lives of so many other high performing, visible Black women. Angellica is someone who I have always admired; she's one of the few celebrities that I follow on social media because I am proud of her but hearing her say those words made me realise that it is so important to encourage the Black women in our lives and give them their proverbial flowers.

So often societal pressures and self-inflicted measures make us feel like we could be doing so much more when in fact very often we are doing more than enough. Her tears were necessary, her words were necessary because they also gave space to true authentic healing and a reawakening. A reawakening for those who haven't been paying attention and wondered where someone like Angellica has been (even though she's still booked an busy) and healing for all those Black women who are are working so hard and who are tired of being strong all the time.  It also serves as a reminder that as Black women our visibility is crucial; no matter what sector we are in our presence is important and we shouldn't be afraid of sharing our gifts with the world even when it is challenging.

I shared my thoughts on LinkedIn and the response was incredible - Angellica is getting her virtual flowers. I hope we can extend this grace to more of the Black women in our lives and continue to uplift them and each other.
